Population living on permafrost in the Arctic

Abstract Permafrost thaw is a challenge in many Arctic regions, one that modifies ecosystems and affects infrastructure livelihoods. To date, there have been no demographic studies of the population on permafrost. We present first estimates number inhabitants permafrost Circumpolar Region (ACPR) project changes as result thaw. combine current projected populations at settlement level with extent. Key findings indicate are 1162 settlements ACPR, accommodating 5 million inhabitants, whom 1 live along coast. Climate-driven projections suggest by 2050, 42% will become permafrost-free due to thawing. Among remaining permafrost, high hazard zones, where consequences be most severe. In total, 3.3 people ACPR currently degrade ultimately disappear 2050.
